Hi Greg, you may not know the origin of the term "we" as far as ham
radio goes. It is a side effect of learning Morse Code which tends
to split the brain into two distinct parts, one for normal stuff and
one for emulating a modem. The split is so severe that the individual
perceives two distinct entities existing within his brain and starts
referring to himself as "we". It must be true because it happened to
us right after we got our first ham ticket.

You can also send an SASE to the ARRL and it will come back in
the return mail.

Another place to snarf one is to visit one of the VE test sessions.
I am sure they won't mind.  I used the previous method, though, when
I did a change of address.

What did the dealer tell you that was different?  Of course you should
realize that the dealers are independent businessmen that may not choose
to keep informed about all the various details of the business.  If
a decent sale was contingent upon getting that information I'm sure
ANY dealer would find it.  THEN they'd know about it for the next
customer that asks.

Ahhh... I love the free market system.

I am not the person who originally asked (and I am no where near
copying 30 wpm), but while between classes and work I have been
trying to learn to head copy a little.  I have already started
recognizing some words, but I still have a ways to go.

Anyway, thanks for all the advise!!  I will certainly try to
keep it in mind, and maybe, someday, I'll be copying that
really fast CW.

Any idea why the Antietam Group did not advertise this year ?   I got a

Hello.

I've read a lot of EMI/RFI hazard stuff and now I'm even
more confused as to whether I'm going to die from radiation
or not...

Let me get a straight forward answer, in plain, direct English
if MY particular ham set up will eventually kill me:

I'm running a TS850 (100 W) with the rig placed approximately
3  ft from my body.  I sometimes use my Clipperton L amplifier
which pumps out about the legal limit...this is placed five
feet from my body.  I use an OPEN balanced antenna tuner
which uses two roller inductors and three very large capacitors;
this and some of the prefab ladder line is nine feet away from
my body.  I mainly do SSB on 40/20/17 meters.

Darn, I wish I had thought of complaining enough to get that offer :-)
Maybe if I just say ("I'd love to get a QRP transmitter/receiver for

Subject: Yet another new source of RFI, Philips "IQ" light bulbs

Was in a Sears today, and saw a display of Philips "IQ" light bulbs.
One has a "microchip" timer in its base that will turn the bulb off
after 1/2 hour.  Another has a built in dimmer circuit, and you can
pulse the power to it to step thru 4 different brightness levels.
A note "Bulb may cause minor interference to AM radio reception"
appears below the user instructions.  I suppose this might mean that
I will be able to listen to a 50000 watt AM station a half mile away.

These things will probably trash some of our HF SSB and or CW bands
as well.

The ARRL exams are as follows:

1A:  5 WPM at 16 WPM Farnsworth
1B:  13 WPM at 18 WPM Farnsworth
1C:  20 WPM at 22 or 23 WPM (can't remember)

If you learn code Farnsworth, you'll have a easier time upgrading.

Here's a FYI regarding a fortunate experience with my particular vehicle
and amateur installation, not a response to the warranty issue.  It was
successful in one Plymouth Voyger ('89) van, the only one I tried.  Attempt
an installation at your own risk!   After reading these story threads, I am
not assuring anyone success!  Perhaps we can build a list of vehicles that
have had amateur radios successfully installed without blowing automotive
electronics.
I've been operating without problems (for a year) from my Plymouth Voyger
('89) van using 350 Watts output on 2 meter SSB/CW to a rooftop
horizontally polorized omni antenna.  Horizontal because of convention (&
ground reflection gain and less noise) used by SSB/CW operators on VHF.
[Trying to operate cross-polorized results in a loss of approximately
30dB!]  I installed a 1 inch wide by 3 inch SHORT length rf ground strap
between the power amplifier and the floor pan.  The transceiver also has a
short rf ground strap to ground (floor pan).  Ofcourse all power cables go
directly to the engine compartment battery.  I also shielded (terminated at
the battery terminal) the BIG (three #14 wires all connected to the
positive battery terminal, w/ 70 Amp fuse) power lead to the power amp with
one inch wide braid.  These measures keep the rf on the OUTSIDE of the
vehicle, where it belongs for more than one reason!  I enjoy SSB because of
the several hundred mile range without waiting for a repeater to free-up.
